Domino Effect Old Fashioned

Domino Effect

In Caribbean culture, dominoes is more than just a game—it’s a ritual, a gathering, a way of life. Picture a warm evening in the yard, where the rhythmic clack of tiles hitting the table creates its own music. Friends and family circle around, trash talk flows as freely as the rum, and each move sets off a chain reaction of laughter, strategy, and camaraderie.

The Domino Effect pays homage to these timeless moments with a Caribbean twist on the classic Old Fashioned. Like the game itself, this cocktail is deceptively simple but rich with complexity. Funk Harbor Dark Rum takes center stage, its deep, aged character enhanced by the molasses-forward sweetness of demerara syrup. Orange and Angostura bitters add layers of spice and citrus, creating a harmony of flavors that unfolds with each sip.

This is a drink for slow sipping and good company—where one round leads to another, one story sparks the next, and the night unfolds like a perfectly played hand. Because once you start, the domino effect takes over, and you won’t want it to end.

What You'll Need

  • 2 oz Funk Harbor Dark Rum
  • ¼ oz Demerara syrup
  • 2 dashes Orange bitters
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Garnish: Orange peel

Putting it Together

1

Add Funk Harbor Dark Rum, demerara syrup, orange bitters, and Angostura bitters to a mixing glass.

2

Fill the mixing glass with ice.

3

Stir gently but continuously for 30-45 seconds until the mixture is well-chilled and properly diluted.

4

Strain into a rocks glass over a large ice cube.

5

Express the oils from an orange peel over the drink by holding it over the glass and giving it a firm twist, then rub the peel around the rim of the glass.

6

Drop the orange peel into the drink as garnish.

Pro Tip

The stirring technique is crucial for this cocktail. Unlike shaking, stirring creates a silky texture without adding air bubbles or over-diluting the spirit. Count to 30-45 as you stir in smooth, continuous circles. A large, clear ice cube not only looks elegant but melts slowly, keeping your drink cold without watering it down too quickly. If you don’t have demerara syrup, you can make it by dissolving equal parts demerara sugar and hot water, then cooling before use.
